Police have charged Hemwattie Abdulla and an alleged accomplice with the murder of overseas-based Guyanese Abdul Majid.
Abdulla who is Majid’s widow and Surojinie Tirmaul of Chesney Village, Corentyne made an appearance in the Springlands Magistrate’s Court yesterday morning.
On April 28, the body of a man was found with his scalp missing and other injuries at the Number 56 Village, Corentyne foreshore. Police had said in a press release that the man was discovered around 7.40 am. The victim wore a silver ring on the left ring finger and was clad in multi-coloured shorts.
It is being alleged that a plan was hatched to murder Majid. He had recently gotten a huge insurance settlement which it is believed was the motive for the plan.
Based on the information gathered by police two men were hired to carry out the plan. Several days before his body was discovered, a cookout was held at No. 63 beach, Corentyne. It was while there that the two men reportedly battered Majid to death before tossing his body into the water. Stabroek News understands that a sum of US$5000 was offered to have Majid killed. Police are still looking for the two men.
Abdulla was arrested on Sunday shortly after she arrived in the country.
She had returned to the US after allegedly telling the man’s relatives that he had gone to Suriname for a visit.
When she arrived on Sunday she had gone to the New Amsterdam Police Station requesting to see the remains of her husband. She was arrested at that point. The two had met four months ago and were later married according to Muslim rites.
Tirmaul was arrested last Saturday.
A file on the matter was sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) on Monday and it was later advised that the duo be charged with the capital offence.
