LEEDS, England, CMC – Leeward Islands batsman Chesney Hughes finally found some form for Derbyshire when he stroked an even half-century against Yorkshire in the Clydesdale Bank 40 limited overs championship here Sunday.
His knock proved in vain, however, as the visitors went down by seven wickets at Headingley. The 21-year-old left-hander helped put on 137 for the first wicket with New Zealander Martin Guptill (89) after Derbyshire were sent in.
He hit four fours off 73 balls while Guptill struck four fours and five sixes off 83 balls.
Once Hughes was bowled leg stump by seamer Moin Ashraf in the 25th over, the innings fell apart as Australian left-arm fast bowler Mitchell Starc claimed three for 28 to limit Derbyshire.
Gary Balance then stroked an unbeaten 77 from 60 balls with six fours and four sixes, to steer Yorkshire home.
Hughes has endured a disappointing season so far, and is yet to play a County Championship match.
He has featured in Derbyshire’s second XI and in the limited overs campaign with a previous highest score of 19.
