A woman was discovered murdered in her D’Urban Street home yesterday morning and it is believed that she was stabbed to death during an argument with her reputed husband. The police are looking for the man who has since disappeared.
The dead woman’s name was given as Donna Thomas, and she was thought to be 45 years old. She was said to have been from Berbice, but had been renting an apartment at Lot 6-9 D’Urban and Cross Streets for the past eight months, and it was there that her body was found.
According to reports, around 8.45 am some employees from the Professional Guard Service where she worked until two weeks ago, decided to visit her at home since she had not been in good health recently. When they arrived they noticed the door ajar and on looking inside discovered the woman lying face down on her bed in a pool of blood. They then alerted the residents who summoned the landlord and the matter was reported to the Brickdam Police Station.
When Stabroek News arrived at the scene Thomas’s body was still at her home and investigators were searching for evidence which could help them identify her murderer. A source told this newspaper that they had been informed that the woman had received her salary on Friday from the security firm where she was currently employed and had refused to give her drug addict husband a portion, as a result of which she was murdered.
The source said that the man was known to the police, and that he had been seen walking along the road some minutes before officers arrived at the scene.
A neighbour who opted to remain anonymous, said that the reputed husband would normally demand money from Thomas whenever she received her salary, and it was thought that this time the woman had refused him and a scuffle had ensued during which he stabbed her to death.
Neighbours told Stabroek News that they heard nothing unusual to indicate that the woman was in trouble, and so they believe she was murdered early on Friday night since several of them had attended the Flag Raising Ceremony at the National Park and returned after 1 am, and heard nothing after that.
Police investigations are ongoing.
