The Summit, hosted by the African Union, attracted African leaders and persons from the African Diaspora from the Caribbean, the Americas and elsewhere, a press release from the Government Information Agency (GINA) said.
Earlier this year, the Union’s leaders agreed to launch the Summit in South Africa and had asked the African Union and South Africa to team up to arrange the event, GINA said. The Summit was held under the theme ‘Towards the Realisation of a United and Integrated Africa and its Diaspora.’ Organisers believe that the event will help to build a solid foundation for reviving the African family across the world.
The prime minister visited the Hector Pieterson Museum in Soweto and met Antoinette Sithole, Pieterson’s sister. In 1976, 12-year-old Pieterson was shot by police during the Soweto Students’ Uprising. He was picked up by Mbuyisa Makhubo, who together with Sithole, ran towards a press car where the lad was taken to hospital. He was pronounced dead on arrival. A photograph depicting the child’s last moments, where he is being carried by Makhubo as Sithole runs alongside them, is mounted outside the museum.
