The trial of murdered Kaneville businessman Barbot Paul, took a turn yesterday as Justice Roxane George, the jury, the prosecution and the defence visited his home at Kaneville, East Bank Demerara, to continue the trial, since his wife Latifan, could not offer an explanation that was understandable by the court of how her husband was shot, when she gave evidence on Thursday.
The visit lasted for about half an hour, and took place in a court room setting in the yard where Paul met his demise.
Paul’s wife recounted how the shooting took place in her testimony. She then took members of the jury, the prosecution, the defence and Justice George to Paul’s second home located a street away. The second house is where the gunmen allegedly took his granddaughter after shooting him and stole his firearm.
After Paul’s wife gave her testimony, the trial was adjourned and resumed in the afternoon in the High Court. In the afternoon session, Paul’s wife continued her testimony.
She was then cross-examined by defence counsel George Thomas, and questions were also asked by members of the jury for the purpose of clarification.
Dwight Da Silva is on trial before Justice George for Paul’s murder and last week a statement he had given to the police was admitted into evidence after a voir dire during which Superintendent of Police, Cedric Gravesande testified.
Paul was described as an outspoken fighter against crime and was shot dead reportedly by a gunman who wanted his firearm.
The trial will continue tomorrow in the High Court with the prosecution presenting its second witness to the court.
