Kevin George, the police constable who was shot last Thursday with arrows, chopped in the head and beaten while transporting a suspect to the Monkey Mountain outpost in Region Eight is said to be improving but relatives are upset about his hospital care.
A senior police official told this newspaper yesterday that a team is still in the area trying to find the persons who fired the arrows. He said too that the suspect who was being transported is still at large
.
George’s mother Rosie James related to this newspaper yesterday that her son’s condition has improved as he had been transferred from the Intensive Care Unit of a private city hospital to the open ward. She said that the 20-year-old is crying out for pains in the head.
She said that while her son was in ICU the wound to his head was being cleaned and attended to. She said that now he is in the ward that has ceased.
James said she is very dissatisfied with the treatment he is receiving noting that she is paying for a service to be provided.
Police had said in a press release that Constable George and Constable Bailey went to the Siparuni area where they arrested a male Brazilian who had an unlicensed shotgun and a quantity of suspected cannabis sativa.
They were taking the suspect back to the Monkey Mountain Outpost in a boat via the Echilebar River, the police press release said when they were attacked by villagers.
Based on the explanations given by Crime Chief Seelall Persaud, the river separates the area where the outpost is located from where the arrest was made.
The Crime Chief, who had said that more than one suspect was arrested, had told this newspaper that while crossing the river, the suspects began shaking the boat resulting in it capsizing.
Persaud said both policemen made it safely to shore but ended up on opposite sides of the river.
He said that based on the information provided, Constable George was attacked and shot at by persons who were on his side of the river. The suspect/s, including the attackers then escaped and according to Persaud a team of policemen has been dispatched to the area to conduct investigations.
Persaud said the wounded policeman was subsequently taken to the medical centre in the area where he was treated before being airlifted to the city.
This newspaper was told yesterday that the other rank is still at the outpost.
