With the technical institutions out of Digicel’s Schools Football Tournament, Brickdam Secondary School is emerging as a serious contender among many of the senior and junior secondary schools vying for the first prize.
Coach Sven Browne told the media on Sunday that he is working hard to ensure that Brickdam reaches the finals. Preparations had intensified but with the CSEC exams in full swing, Browne said he has had to reduce training as several of the players short-listed to vie for a place on the team are writing exams. This is the main reason for low turnouts to practice sessions which are usually twice per week, he explained.
He noted that while the sport is important, academics are just as crucial in helping students to become well-rounded persons. A sound education will help students to think on their feet when the time comes for them to make critical decisions, he added.
Browne also said that one of their main challenges is finding a permanent ground for training. Brickdam Secondary does not have a ground of its own or one that is easily accessible; this is why practice sessions are held at the National Park on Fridays and Saturdays. Despite the circumstances, the squad is 90% ready for the tourney, he said.
On completion of the CSEC, Browne is confident that the team will put in the necessary work to present a strong challenge for the first prize.
