Three days of intense competition came to a close on Sunday night when the GCC, female GCC Tigers and Hikers all secured victories in the Bryden and Fernandes Indoor Hockey Tournament at the National Gymnasium.
In the first of the three finals, GCC secured a single point victory over Hikers in the second division match. GCC scored three points. In regulation time both teams tied at two-all. Moving to the penalty period they tied again, this time nil-all. However, in sudden death it was do or die for both teams when GCC emerged with a two-point lead over Hikers who had one point.
For GCC, Stephen Xavier scored in the fifth minute followed by S. Gill in the 18th minute. For Hikers, Aroydy Bradford scored in the 36th minute and Colonel Heywood in the 38th minute.
In the female match, GCC Tigers defeated their senior counterparts GCC Spartans 3-2. Tigers’ Sonia Jardine scored in the second minute, Shebiki Baptiste in the 13th minute and Kerensa Fernandes in 18th minute. Spartans’ Gabriella Xavier scored in the 14th minute and Athena Seenanon in the 29th minute.
The feature match of the evening between rivals GCC and Hikers went down to the wire as both teams battled for first place. At half-time the score was one-all but the Hikers scored a second goal and prevented their opponents from scoring an equalizer. Tempers flared and GCC’s Dwayne Scott got a green card minutes before the stoppage time for arguing with the umpire over what he thought was an incorrect call.
Meanwhile, Hikers Randy Hope scored in the 12th minute and Devin Munroe in the 24th minute and the lone GCC goal was struck by Kevin Spencer in the 14th minute.
At the close Gabriella Xavier was named MVP in the women’s match-up while Devin Munroe was selected for the men’s and Jason Hoyte for the men’s second division team. Leroy Jack of St Stanislaus College was judged the most promising player.
