The Guyana Tourism Authority (GTA) on Saturday welcomed 30 hikers from Trinidad and Tobago ahead of their four-day trek to Kaieteur Falls.
According to a GTA press release, the group from Caribbean Hiking Adventures group aims to “conquer” the Caribbean islands hiking destinations. Leader Richard Lewis said, “Everything we have done so far has been preparing us for this trip. We know that Guyana is part of the Amazon Basin and will be like no other trip we have taken.”
The trip was facilitated by Frank Singh, the owner of Rainforest Tours, who promised the group a memorable adventure when he welcomed them. Lewis said the group chose to visit Guyana “because we wanted to know what the real forest feels and looks like. We decided collectively to come here. We have been to other islands…but we are really looking forward to this.”
Lewis has over 20 years of hiking experience and his team includes Rhonda Beckles-Lewis, Adrian Rush, Nicola Mark and Felix Lamy, all of whom are former members of Hikers Inc, the release said. GTA Director Indranauth Haralsingh said hiking is rapidly becoming one of the most popular recreational activities and the Guyana rainforest provides an amazing hiking experience. This is the second hiking group from Trinidad to visit Guyana. The GTA head was confident that the tour would provide the hikers with the opportunity to “see the diversity of the attractions that we have here, from the rugged mountains to the wild tropical rainforest, there are numerous developed trails frequented by happy indigenous peoples, a journey that all adventurers the world over would want to experience.” Meanwhile, Haralsingh said Guyana is launching the Sail Guyana Initiative in Trinidad and Tobago on June 4, and acting Minister of Tourism Irfaan Ali will be visiting the ‘Twin Island’ Republic for the event.
