Masters Category Two (74kgs) powerlifter, Winston Stoby’s dead-lift of 265.5kgs/585.4 pounds at the 2012 Caribbean Championships in St Thomas, US Virgin Islands, in April was officially confirmed as a world record by the International Powerlifting Federation (IPF).
According to the Guyana Amateur Powerlifting Federation (GAPF), the IPF has officially listed Stoby as the World Record Holder for the dead-lift after he erased the previous record of 265.0kgs/584.32 pounds and passed his drug tests.
Stoby, 53, is the first Guyanese and Caribbean lifter to hold a world record in any category to date in the sport of powerlifting.
Besides winning two gold medals at the championships and breaking the world record for the dead-lift, Stoby equaled the record for the squat 242.5kgs and bench-pressed 137.5kgs. Stoby’s next assignment will be in Killen, Texas, USA, where he and ‘Big’ John Edwards will compete in the World Masters Championships where he stated he has plans on breaking his own world record.
Meanwhile Berbician powerlifters Vijay Rahim and Anis Ade-Thomas also entered their names in the Commonwealth record books while at the championships in St Thomas. Rahim lifting in the Men’s junior 59kgs/130 pounds bodyweight class category shattered the old Commonwealth dead-lift record of 222.5kgs/490.6 pounds with a new record of 225.0kgs/496.12 pounds.
Ade-Thomas in his final year as a junior, made sure he made his mark with a record breaking dead-lift 292.5kgs/644.96 pounds in his weight class (83kgs/183 pounds).
Guyana is scheduled to send a team to the Commonwealth Championships next year in New Zealand.
