Fire Chief Marlon Gentle has confirmed that the April 1 fire that gutted the Jaigobin Complex on Regent Street, Georgetown, was as a result of arson.
Speaking to Stabroek News, Gentle said that the fire was set by unknown person/s and originated in the south eastern section of the building which housed the Dilip’s Variety Store or under a stairwell.
The Fire Chief added that evidence suggests that the door to Dilip’s Variety Store was forced open and then the arsonists began their work.
On Sunday April 1, around 5:35am, the Fire Service received a report of the fire and responded. Due to heavy grill work on the building, fire fighters could not to enter the building to contain the blaze.
The complex housed numerous stores which sold cosmetics, garments, cloth and electronics. To date the businesses that were housed in the complex are yet to make a new starts and the site remains with no evidence to indicate a plan to rebuild.
