The main opposition A Partnership for National Unity is today expected to nominate acting Police Commissioner, Leroy Brumell, to be appointed to the substantive post.
An APNU source yesterday evening informed Stabroek News of their party’s decision to seek confirmation of Brumell to the position he has been acting in for the past six months.
When contacted, Opposition Leader, David Granger, neither admitted nor denied claims of the nomination. Instead, he confirmed that he was meeting today, as per request of President Donald Ramotar to discuss and forward a nominee. He said the President had invited him, as Leader of the Opposition and as required under the Constitution, to nominate and discuss options on a Commissioner of Police.
However, the source told this newspaper that the party, “is inclined to select the acting commissioner,” based on Brumell’s record and seniority.
Brumell has been acting in the position since former commissioner Henry Greene, who had been retained past retirement age, retired in the wake of an allegation that he had raped a woman who sought his intervention in a criminal case.
The now commissioner, who is most senior in rank currently, has 35-plus years in the force and has worked in all divisions of the GPF. Stabroek News confirmed that he has had both local and overseas training after which he commanded several divisions.
