Residents of Watooka, Noitegedacht, Fair’s Rust, Richmond Hill and other communities served by the Mackenzie Water Treatment Plant have been without potable water supply for over five days and they are displeased with the rationing of water being distributed by a contractor.
A resident told Stabroek News that a pipe or water main close to the water treatment plant burst and resulted in the immediate cut of the water supply to the areas. The resident said the company indicated that the problem would have been rectified following day but to date the situation has not improved.
Regional Chairman Sharma Solomon said that the matter was brought to his attention on Tuesday and the Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) assured him that the situation would have returned to normalcy by Wednesday. On Thursday evening, a truck contracted by the company started distributing water to affected residents.
“This is most obnoxious,” a woman said. “I have a house full of children, three toilets fuh flush, children to send to school, food to cook and they telling me how they can’t full a barrel ah water fuh me cause they got to go to everybody,” she added.
Residents have been voicing concerns over what seems to be GWI contractors’ inability to effectively execute the installation of and laying of new systems especially at the Mackenzie plant.
They said that in less than eight months, the area where the problem lies has been dug up more than three times and would have taken days and in some cases more than a week to be rectified. Officials of the company could not be reached for comment.
