A coconut tree fell on a Linden house early yesterday morning, when powerful winds lashed the mining the town during a storm.
The tree that hit the Rodney family’s house at Lot 48 Victory Valley, Wismar, caused the roof over Shelly Rodney’s bedroom to cave in. “I didn’t know what was happening,” Rodney told Stabroek News, explaining that she was awakened by a smashing sound just after 3am. “All I hear was my sister shouting out for me,” she added.
It was only when she responded to her sister’s calls that the woman realised that she could have been killed. “When is your time is your time, ’cause when I look up and see what was over me, I could have fainted,” she said.
The winds lasted between 10 and 15 minutes and there were other reports of trees falling on houses in the town and some households losing roofing, either in parts or entirely.
There were, however, no reports of injuries.
Meanwhile, members of the Rodney family said that they were relieved that no one was injured.
They were also angry at housing authorities, whom, they said, have been giving the family a run-around for land to relocate.
