President Donald Ramotar yesterday told Guyanese that the country will continue to pursue a green economy.
In his remarks, before participating in the Ministry of Natural Resources and the Environment’s ‘Green Walk’, yesterday morning, the president stated that there was the need for a green economy to manage man’s relationship with nature. Educating and sensitizing citizens of Earth’s depleting resources and the need for sustainability is key to raising the level of environment consciousness, a release from the Ministry of Natural Resources and the Environment reported him as saying.
Further, the President stated government’s commitment in pursuing a green economy through renewable energy so as to reduce pollution in Guyana, contributing to a better country and ultimately a better world.
Several government ministries were challenged to play an integral role in improving the environment by enhancing villages, streets and towns .
According to the release, Minister of Natural Resources, Robert Persaud, noted that the President’s vision in creating his ministry is an indication of government’s commitment towards integrated management of all natural resources as they move towards a green economy.
It is the ultimate goal of government to transcend the current unsustainable way of doing business and take Guyana along a green low carbon and climate resilient trajectory, Persaud said. He stated that a major area of focus for his ministry was increased public engagement and awareness on environmental issues so as to facilitate behavioural change towards the environment. There was a massive response from participants who were thanked for their participation especially students, government agencies and concerned stakeholders the release said. Participants were judged in four categories: largest contingent, uniformity, best banner and best chant. Graham’s Hall Primary took away first prizes in the Largest Contingent, Uniformity and Best Chant categories while placing second to Guyana Amazon Tropical Bird Society in the best Banner category. Other prize winners were in the largest Contingent Marian Academy 2nd and the Guyana Police Force 3rd.Uniformity 2nd for Guyana Forestry Commission and 3rd the Seventh Day Adventist Church, Olivet. Best Chant 2nd spot for Marian Academy and 3rd to the Olivet Church.
This year, World Environment Day 2012 marks the 40th anniversary of the event which was first established by the UN General Assembly in 1972 to mark the opening of the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment.
