Dear Editor,
I join Mr Vidyaratha Kissoon in his absolute condemnation of the two pictures and the headline on the front page of the Kaieteur News on June 2nd, 2012 entitled `Woman gets sound beating in public for threatening to leave husband’.
In an effort to sensationalise and sell, Mr Adam Harris the editor of that day’s edition slipped seamlessly back into that period when violence against women was considered permissible and indeed even glorified.
Mr Harris must understand that as one of the editors of Guyana’s largest selling newspapers he has both a legal and moral duty to uphold the basic tenets of modern journalism.
I call on both Mr Harris and Kaieteur News to immediately issue a public apology to this brave woman, mother and sister.
Yours faithfully
Deborah Backer
