A man who threatened to chop off his wife’s head because he was hungry and she had not finished cooking was fined $15,000 yesterday and put on a one-year bond by Magistrate Hazel Octave-Hamilton.
Maxwell Jones appeared in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court yesterday accused of making use of threatening language to Allison Sauyers on June 1 at Port Kaituma.
After Jones pleaded guilty to the charge the police prosecutor stated that according to the facts of the case Jones and the virtual complainant (VC) have been in a common-law union for about 15 years.
On the day in question at about 1:00pm Jones went home and inquired about his food and was told by the VC that she wasn’t finished cooking.
He replied that she is never finished cooking when he comes home and he then threatened to chop off her head.
She became afraid and made a report to the Port Kaituma Police Station and Jones was subsequently arrested and charged.
In response to the facts Jones said that he was so under the influence of alcohol that he cannot remember what he had said that day.
In addition to the fine Jones was also placed on a one-year bond to keep the peace and be of good behaviour.
The alternative to paying the fine is ten days imprisonment.
