(Barbados Nation) Not only is REDjet not getting any financial assistance from the Antigua and Barbuda government, it doesn’t appear to be receiving any moral support either, with Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer declaring that the airline was “doomed to failure”.
Pointing out that helping the Barbados-based carrier was out of the question, Spencer said REDjet’s “unsustainable” model could not fly in the regional airline industry.
“The whole question of lending a hand, I don’t think that question arises at all because we always felt that the [low-fare] concept that they put forward was clearly untenable,” he told the Antigua station Observer Radio.
“They obviously knew that from the very onset. It was a case where they experimented, they tried it and I knew it was doomed to failure from the beginning.”
REDjet, which announced an indefinite suspension of flights on March 16, has presented a new business plan to the Barbados and Guyana governments in its appeal for financial assistance.
There has been no word yet on whether help will come from either direction.
