TORONTO, Canada, CMC – Trinidad and Tobago’s Stephen Ames will tee off in the US Open for the first time in three years after booking his spot at one of 11 sectional qualifiers on Monday.
The 48-year-old, who calls Calgary home, carded rounds of 65 and 69 in the 36-hole qualifier at the Germantown Country Club in Tennessee to finish in a four-way tie for second at eight-under 134, and grab one of the nine available spots.
Ames has struggled this season, missing six of his last eight cuts on the PGA Tour but turned it around to book his place at the year’s second Major, scheduled for the Olympic Club in San Francisco starting June 14.
A former PGA Championship winner, Ames finished 10th in his last outing at the US Open in 2009.
His best finish to date was tied for ninth, eight years ago at the Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in New York.
Ames will warm up for the US Open when he tees off in the opening round of the St Jude Classic today. He has 12:45 pm (1:45 pm) tee time at TPC Southwind and play alongside Venezuelan Jhonattan Vegas and American Jason Bohn.
