The Triple Fiesta organised by mobile telecommunications operator, Digicel, is said to be a perfect opportunity for the netball team as they prepare for the upcoming American Federation of Netball Associations tournament scheduled for Trinidad in July.
The Digicel Triple Fiesta will feature three sporting disciplines on Saturday at the National Gymnasium: Netball, Volleyball and Hockey.
President of the Guyana Netball Association (GNA) Kim Kyte-John said: “We are using the opportunity of course for them to test their skills and readiness when they face the other teams in the Americas.”
The team, she said, has been in training for a while now, training sometimes four times per week under the watchful eye of national coach Lavern Fraser-Thomas.
She said that the team is read and the girls are very confident in themselves. “They are very confident I must say – they have been working really hard and as the executive we are confident that they will do their best. And that is what we can expect at this stage.”
Digicel, Kyte-John said, should be commended for their support. “They have shown the kind of support and interest in netball that is needed to push the sport forward. We are very pleased with their commitment.”
Digicel is not only sponsoring the female team for the next two years, but they have been showing continued interest in promoting the sport, she added.
According to the GNA president the company has provided the opportunity for the association to showcase the sport to a wide audience, something they have been trying to do for some time.
This, she added, will encourage more young women to get involved in the sport but while the sport may seem to be female-oriented it is not because males are also a part of the sport.
“This effort may get one less young person off the street, using drugs or involved in crime and Digicel has seen that vision and is working towards it.”
