Police have arrested a suspect over the murder of miner Colin Jackson called “Jacko” who was fatally shot at the Ikewan Backdam  in the Cuyuni on Tuesday night.

Stabroek News understands that the man was apprehended by a party of police officers who went into the Region 7 mining area on Wednesday to investigate the murder of the 38-year old father of three.

A police source told Stabroek News yesterday that the suspect was brought out by the ranks along with the body of Jackson late Wednesday night.

The man is expected to be charged shortly in connection with Jackson’s death.

The Stevedore, South Georgetown resident who was a former mines officer attached to the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC) was fatally shot on Tuesday evening in a crime that his family suspects stemmed from a past grievance with a businessman.

The man was shot three times about the body by his assailant as he stood in front of a shop.

His reputed wife Stacy Leslie recalled that her husband left the city on Monday morning for the backdam, where he has a mining operation. She said that her husband had been working in the area for about five years.

The woman said that her husband had “problems” with another man and she said that reports from the backdam indicated that the other man’s son may have been the shooter. “He and this man called ‘Tex’ had some problems and like the man son decide to take the matter over and kill Colin,” a friend of Jackson noted.

Jackson’s body is at the Lyken’s Funeral Parlour in the city awaiting a post-mortem (PM) examination which is expected to be undertaken today.
