The fifth annual Inter-Organization Basketball tournament organized by VP Promotions will tip off tomorrow at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH) from 11:00hrs.
The one-day knockout tournament will feature 16 teams compared to the 25 which participated last year.
President of VP Promotions Vijay Panday, said that the reduction in teams does not reflect the lack of progression of the tournament but speaks of the lack of sponsorship for the tournament.
“The reduction in teams is due to the tournament not getting enough sponsorship because what we would find is that the tournament would run into two days and that is not good for us financially, but this year the teams are well balanced.
“Sponsors need to come out and see these sports so they can help take the youth out of idle things and give them something to be encouraged about, but it’s about the tournament, is not about young or old, it’s about these organizations coming out and having a day of fun,” Panday told Stabroek Sport.
One game will last for 20 minutes (10 minutes per half) while all players will have to play carefully as four fouls will be the limit to each player. Teams will also have just one timeout per half.
The tournament is also expected to be keenly contested as Geddes Grant Guyana Limited will be looking to defend their title come game day against such teams as National Insurance Scheme (NIS), Republic Bank, The Guyana Defence Force and the Guyana Police Force just to name a few.
