Football enthusiast Mark Phillips is calling on football fans to boycott tomorrow’s game between the Golden Jaguars and Costa Rica if there is no reduction in the price of admission.
“If the ticket price to the Golden Jaguar/Costa Rica match is not reduced from $3000 to $2000 or $1500 I am advising Guyanese to boycott the Golden Jaguars match on Tuesday (tomorrow),” said Phillips in an interview with Stabroek Sport.
According to Phillips, while he has faith that the Jaguars can hold their own, his concern is for the ordinary man who may not be able to afford the $3000.
“The average person has to work three days to make $3000; the average person that goes to football works for an average of $7000 to $10,000 a week. So if you want to take your girlfriend to the game, then you got to get transportation to go to the game and back. You are basically looking at $10,000 which is your entire week’s salary,” Phillips opined.
He argued that the above figure does not even cater for persons purchasing beverages and snacks.
Phillips has another grouse in that he claims that many Guyanese were not aware of the colours of the Golden Jaguars uniforms.
“Nobody in Guyana can tell what the Jaguars uniforms look like. They get some sponsorship from some company in Columbia that is why they were in Columbia,” he alleged.
“Nobody knows anything about the sponsorship. These are things that the general public needs to know.”
Phillips said he was not too happy with the preparation of the Golden Jaguars team prior to the game against Mexico.
“Now they took this team on the road for five or six international games which I don’t understand. I really would like Mr Shabazz (Jamaal) and the GFF executives to explain to me why you carry a team on the road for all those international games and as you might know we lost most of those games.”
