The 12-year-old rape victim, who gave birth to a healthy baby via Caesarean Section at the Georgetown Hospital two weeks ago, has been discharged from the institution and is in the care of relatives.
A source told this newspaper that both mother and baby are in good health. The source added that the girl’s relatives have undertaken the responsibility of caring for both of her and the baby and will be receiving assistance from the Child Care and Protection Agency (CC&PA).
The source said officials from the agency are working on a plan to have the child either continue her education or learn a skill.
This newspaper had been told that CC&PA had known about the girl’s situation for some time now. The girl is originally from Berbice and the perpetrator – her stepfather – is currently incarcerated after he was charged with rape.
After it was revealed that the child was pregnant, this newspaper had been told that she was placed in the custody of a relative. The CC&PA had been monitoring the child since becoming aware of her situation.
