The 16-year-old North West District girl, who was badly chopped by her lover at Big Creek Backdam, is said to be steadily improving at the Georgetown Public Hospital’s High Dependency Unit (HDU), where she remains a patient.
A source, who is close to the teenager, told Stabroek News that she is still unable to speak and is receiving speech therapy.
“She is not speaking due to the severe head injuries but is improving as she has become aware of her surroundings and is responding to known persons,” the source stated.
The girl sustained a gaping wound about six inches long to her head in addition to numerous chops about the body. The source said that she is paralyzed on her right side due to severity of the wounds but she has been recovering since she is received specialised treatment.
Meanwhile, Crime Chief Seelall Persaud said yesterday that the suspect, a 22-year-old Pomeroon resident, remains on the run. Sources close to the case have indicated that the man might have fled to Venezuela.
The chopping, which occurred around midnight on May 20, came after the suspect reportedly caught the teen in a compromising position with Junior Joseph, a 22-year-old employee of his dredge operation. Joseph was chopped to death during the incident.
