The National Community Basketball League (NCBL) concluded its preliminary round last weekend with Western Union Central Mackenzie posting the highest team total of the tournament while holding Guyhoc/Tucville to the lowest team score.
The league ventured to Linden last Saturday with Central Mackenzie demolishing Guyhoc/Tucville 103-24. The lopsided game’s only excitement was the fact that the Linden team was the first to pass the 100 mark in the tournament while Guyhoc/Tucville was embarrassed by recording the lowest score of the tournament, 24 points.
Shawn Webster had a game-high 18 points for the winning team while Orin Rose added 17 points.
Earlier Saturday evening, Wismar routed Sculpture Craft Beterverwating/Melanie 89-56 displaying in the process, deadly precision around the rim.
Harold Adams scored the game-high 21 points for Wismar while Chris Williams added 14 points. Marlon Pollydore and Keon Cameron also got into the action with 13 points each.
On Sunday the tournament shifted to the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall for the final preliminary games which saw Western Union Vryheid’s Lust/Plaisaince holding on to win 72-71 against defending champions Digicom Albouystown/Charlestown in a game that could have sent either community home.
The game was easily the best of the tournament to date as both teams played smoothly on the offensive end while also showing that they both can play tenacious defence.
However, the defending champions had their chance to send the game into overtime but could only score one of two free throws which resulted in their eventual downfall.
Ron Campbell had 20 points for the Western Union sponsored team while junior National Guard Nikkolai Smith and Stephan Gillis contributed 14 points each.
Kerwin Blades had a game-high 23 points for the defending champions while Devon Persaud added 10 in the heart-sinking loss.
The quarterfinal round will bounce off tomorrow from 19:00hrs at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall. (Treiston Joseph)
