Acting Tourism Minister Irfaan Ali and a team travelled to Trinidad and Tobago last week in a move to launch a campaign to sell Guyana as a tourist destination in T&T.
The team, which included Director of the Guyana Tourism Authority (GTA) Indranauth Haralsingh and Chief Executive Officer of the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, Timehri, Ramesh Ghir, met representatives of Advantage Advertising as well as Trinidad’s Minister of Transport Devant Maharaj and other Trinidadian officials.
“Representatives from the company will also be travelling to Guyana later this month to meet with tourism industry stakeholders and to deliver a presentation on the potential of the Trinidad and Tobago Market,” Ali is quoted as saying in a ministry press release.
The ministry explained that Guyana is set to launch a massive destination campaign out of T&T shortly, as efforts continue to expand the tourism sector and in particular to encourage more persons out of the island to holiday here.
The release stated that the Tourism Ministry will be looking to host a Familiarisation Trip (FAM) for the T&T Tour Operators as well as media practitioners, as part of efforts to sell ‘Destination Guyana.’
“Guyana is set to launch an aggressive campaign to capture the Trinidad and Tobago market; we have recognised that this is a very lucrative area and we are going to do our best to take advantage of this opportunity,” Ali stated.
Among the issues discussed at the meeting was the possibility of Caribbean Airlines (CAL) establishing an in-transit lounge for Guyanese at the Piarco International Airport.
