A 26-year-old man accused of assaulting and attempting to rob another was yesterday remanded to prison after appearing before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.
The allegation against Donald Camacho is that on May 14 at Light Street, Georgetown, he assaulted Donaldton Harripaul with intent to rob him.
The accused denied the charge when it was read to him at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
Police Sergeant Tracy May Gittens, prosecuting, said that on the day in question the defendant and another man approached the complainant and dealt him several cuffs before demanding his money.
According to the prosecutor, the virtual complainant (VC) raised an alarm which subsequently led to the apprehension of the accused but his accomplice managed to escape.
The prosecution when asked said that it had no objection to the accused being granted his pretrial liberty.
The investigating rank who was present in court, however, explained to the magistrate that the accused lives in an interior location to which he fled after allegedly committing the robbery and he does not work in Georgetown.
Prior to this information from the rank, the defendant gave his address as 67 Fifth Street, Alberttown, and his occupation as a security guard attached to a city firm but this too the rank disputed.
Camacho was subsequently remanded to prison.
When asked by the court, the VC said he did not wish to proceed with the matter as it would be too time consuming for him.
When questioned if that was his only reason for wanting to drop the matter, he responded in the affirmative.
Magistrate Sewnarine-Beharry then said that proceedings into the matter will be expedited. She enquired from the prosecution how soon it would be able to file statements and it indicated by June 18.
She then set June 26 as the trial date and ordered the VC to be present on that date while the accused will return on Monday to uplift his statements and then on the 26th June for trial.
