Dear Editor,
It is being reported that Mr Robert Corbin will not be competing for the leadership of the PNCR at this year’s congress. I must commence by stating that I hold no brief for Mr Granger, neither am I suggesting that Mr Corbin did everything right while he served as Leader of the PNCR or as Leader of the Opposition.
However, I believe that, unlike many of us, Mr Corbin did not leave the shores of Guyana in search of greener pastures, but instead he and his immediate family made the sacrifice of staying at home in order to lead the PNCR and hold the party together as it endured several years as a party in opposition. Everyone is aware of how difficult it is to maintain an opposition party, hence Mr Corbin has to be recognized for assembling the financial and material resources that have been necessary to keep the PNCR afloat since 1992.
Finally, recognition has to be given to Mr Corbin for (a) initiating a plan to select a presidential candidate who was not the leader of the PNCR to contest last year’s general elections; (b) to link the PNCR with APNU; and (c) through APNU’s participation, earn a one-seat majority in Guyana’s parliament. That one-seat majority has so far been paying significant dividends for the Guyanese society.
In closing, I just want to give Jack (Mr Corbin) his jacket.
Yours faithfully,
Morris Wilson
