For the second successive year Buxton Sceondary School’s football team was knocked out of the Digicel schools football tournament when they suffered an 11-1 defeat at the hands of Bygeval Multilateral in the opening match of the competition at the Georgetown Cricket Club, ground, Bourda yesterday.
Scoring for Bygeval were Janson Jack, Samuel Charles and Kelvin James.
Both Jack and Charles scored five goals apiece while James scored one. Jack scored in the 21st, 23rd, 33rd, 34th and 48th minutes while Charles found the back of the net in the 18th, 24th, 50th, 53rd and 90th minutes.
James opened the scoring netting in the sixth minute.
Jack scored two goals in the first half and three in the
second half while Charles netted four in the first half and one on the second half. James scored his goal in the first half.
The lone goal which was scored for Buxton was an own goal. The ball came off the feet of a defender and was accidentally netted by Bygeval’s goalkeeper Richard Sealy.
That goal literally had a number of Bygeval’s player falling to the ground in shock and disappointment.
Buxton’s Captain Dwight MC Allister, in an interview with Stabroek Sport after the match said that his team failed to delivere.
“Today we did not give our best and actually, the team failed us a lot because we were expecting to do better.”
According to him while they played better football in the second half of the game the first half saw them failing miserably for which he blamed miscommunication.
The team had a number of occasions to score in some instances but failed to capitalize on those opportunities.
Bygeval’s Coach Ray Daw said that he was satisfied with his team’s performance but added that yesterday’s match exposed some of their weaknesses which he said will be addressed before their second match.
“I don’t think the guys are fully fit so that is what we will be working on for our next game.”
The match, which started some 15 minutes late, saw Digicel’s Chief Executive officer Gregory Dean kicking off the ball to signal the start of the match.
Education Minister Priya Manickchand, who was expected to deliver a pep talk to the players was a no show as was Minister of Sport, Dr. Frank Anthony.
The two were represented by Chief Education officer Olato Sam and Permanent Secretary Alfred King. Also present at the tournament was Director of Sport, Neil Kumar.
The tournament continues today with two matches in Bartica and Kwakwani. At Bartica, Bartica Secondary tackles 3 Miles Secondary at the Bartica Centre Ground at 15 hours while Kwakwani Secondary engages Christianburg Secondary at the Kwakwani Centre Ground 15:30 hours.
