European Union Ambassador Robert Kopecky recently paid an official visit to the office of the BK Group of Companies on Mandela Avenue and met with the company’s managing director, Brian Tiwarie, and senior members of his staff, a press release stated.
The BK Group of Companies is currently contracted under the ninth EDF Sea Defence Programme to perform extensive construction works at various locations along Guyana’s coast.
According to the release, the managing director, along with engineers Basdeo Roopnauth and Agnes Dalrymple, and company directors Briony Tiwarie and Gloria Tiwarie, reviewed the progress of the construction works with Ambassador Kopecky.
Meanwhile, Managing Director Tiwarie took the opportunity to brief the ambassador on the advantages of using armour rock construction (rip rap) over permanent wave walls which form part of the sea defences, and pointed out that the construction of groynes in areas such as Suddie on the Essequibo Coast are a worthwhile investment to enhance the sea defences.
In discussing the benefits to Guyana of the major EU investment in sea defences, Tiwarie emphasised the protection afforded to the sugar and rice industries and the prevention of flooding to Guyana’s coastal communities.
The ambassador and Tiwarie exchanged views on a number of other subjects, including the functioning of the CSME and the development of tourism.
Tiwarie informed the ambassador that the BK Group of Companies had invested in, and is expanding, its tourist facility at the company’s Essequibo quarry, and noted that the Caricom heads of government had held their retreat at the quarry.
