Rampersaud Latchman, 47, of Fyrish, Corentyne lost his life after he was struck down on the public road some time on Sunday night; the driver of the vehicle that killed him is said to be on the run.
His nephew, Musa Ramdass said he got a call around 11.45 pm that his uncle “got knock down and was lying on the road. When he got to the scene within minutes the police were already there.
He said it seemed as though his uncle, known as ‘Rampo’ was lying across the road when he was hit because his throat and his groin received serious injuries.
He suggested that the injuries were from the wheels of the vehicle that ran over him. His remains were taken to the mortuary and a post-mortem examination was conducted yesterday.
Ramdass lamented that even if his uncle, who was heavily intoxicated, was lying on the road the driver could have spotted him because of the “bright street light.” He said that although the man liked to consume a lot of alcohol he had no problems with anyone and that residents could have gotten him to run any errand and do odd jobs.
A resident told Stabroek News that Rampersaud would always go to his house to assist him and he went to his house around 5.30 am on Sunday to start feeding his ducks.
He said he had invited the man to spend Father’s Day at his house and after he finished his chores he started drinking. He said Rampersaud then left around 9.30 am “to go home and sleep” and return. However, the man never returned to his house but he heard that later in the day he went to drink with some other men.
He learnt afterwards too that the man went to a bar opposite his house. He assumed that the man was on his way home when he met his demise.
The man said that although Rampersaud was struck down close to his house he did not hear a sound. It was not until the body was taken away that someone called his phone and he learnt about the accident.
He described him as a “very kind person; he was the handyman in the village. If you send him to the shop 10 times he would go and don’t complain.”
