The 11-year-old girl, who was impregnated after being raped by her father, has been enrolled in a clinic and she is being treated as a high risk case.
A source close to the case told Stabroek News yesterday that the child is being closely monitored by officials at the Child Care and Protection Agency (CC&PA). She will remain in the custody of her mother, who is still under investigation by the police, the source said.
This newspaper was told that the child’s story that her father, who committed suicide by drinking poison last December, was the man who impregnated her has been determined to be accurate. There is no indication that she was raped by anyone else, the source said.
Officers from CC&PA two Mondays ago went to a community along the Linden/Soesdyke Highway, where they found the visibly-pregnant child, who was being kept away from school while awaiting her Grade Six examination results for placement at a secondary school. This newspaper was informed that it is being claimed that the child was impregnated some time late last year. Her mother, during questioning, denied knowing about the pregnancy.
The CC&PA was alerted to the situation after receiving a tip off through its hotline.
Meanwhile, Stabroek News was told yesterday that there are eight underage mothers currently in the care of the agency.
Two have since decided to return to school. The mothers and their babies are housed in a separate area in one of the homes run by the agency.
This newspaper was told that all eight girls are being counselled.
CC&PA officials will also soon decide on the future of the babies; whether they should be put up for adoption or be released into the care and custody of a relative of the children.
