Transparency Institute of Guyana (TIG) says the public must demand accountability from persons in positions of trust, during an interactive session held recently with a group of adult students.
According to a press release, the presentation was made by TIG President and Attorney-at-Law Gino Persaud in a three-hour session that was “highly participatory, even controversial at times as the participants defined and identified corruption locally and internationally.” The group looked at the effects of corruption such as undermining democracy, the rule of law and the perpetuation of poverty and discussed why citizens should get involved, speak out and demand transparency and accountability from the public and private sector.
An affiliate of Transparency International, TIG is the only civil society organisation dedicated to promoting transparency and accountability and raising awareness on corruption and its effects, the release said. Its goals include educating and raising awareness about corruption, its causes and consequences on national development; promoting the effective and transparent functioning of public and private sector institutions and empowering citizens to demand a society where public and private officials in positions of trust are held accountable.
