A man accused of stealing a chainsaw valued in excess of $200,000 was yesterday admitted to bail in the sum of $200,000 when he appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
The allegation against Shawn Smith is that on June 15 at Georgetown he stole one chainsaw valued $230,000, property of Terrence Bowry.
The 28-year-old sales vendor who resides in South Ruimveldt pleaded not guilty to the larceny charge when it was read to him by acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.
The prosecution stated that on the day in question the virtual complainant had just returned from Linden with six chainsaws and was in the process of loading them into a vehicle when the incident occurred.
According to Prosecutor Philip Sheriff, it was while the items were being placed into the vehicle that the accused stole one of the chainsaws.
The matter was subsequently reported to the police and an investigation led to the accused being arrested and charged.
Smith was ordered to return to court on July 6 for statements.
