Dear Editor,
In a previous letter which you kindly carried in your newspaper, I suggested that because of the bitter competition that took place at the last two congresses of the PNCR which I gather have left lingering divisions and enmities within the party, at this year’s congress, the party’s membership should agree on a consensus candidate in order to avoid past divisiveness. However, Editor, in reading reactions from some of your readers, there is an obvious misunderstanding around my call for a consensus candidate, preferably Brigadier (rtd) David Granger, and hence I offer clarifications.
By consensus, I am not suggesting an erosion of democracy within the PNCR; I am simply suggesting that after the nomination process is over for the leadership position of the party, those nominees meet among themselves and agree on a consensus candidate, instead of having another open showdown at this year’s congress, that can only spur further disunity.
Editor, I believe that there are some enemies of the PNCR who would welcome such a showdown, or there are commentators and spectators who get pleasure from such battles.
Again, it is only my personal view that the consensus candidate should be Brigadier (rtd) Granger, since he is already Guyana’s Leader of the Opposition.
