KINGSTON, Jamaica, CMC – Jamaica’s Sunshine Girls squandered a potential match-winning lead at the end of the third quarter to go down to South Africa in an international Test for the first time in nearly three decades here Tuesday night.
Leading 44-38 at the start of the final stanza, Jamaica amazingly lost their way to surrender the quarter 5-18 and crash to a surprise 49-56 defeat at the National Indoor Centre.
South Africa owed their win to goal shooter Chrisna Bootha who had an outstanding game with 49 goals form 54 attempts.
For Jamaica, goal shooter Jhaniele Fowler scored 40 from 44 attempts.
“We really have been working so hard for this win and we needed it. It came at the right time and we will take a lot from the win going forward,” said Proteas captain Amanda Mynhardt.
“Each one of us is proud … proud for ourselves and proud for our country. We believed in ourselves individually and that spilt over to us believing in our team and the team’s effort.”
