Cabinet has approved the establishment of first degree programmes in pharmacy, rehabilitation medicine and optometry at the University of Guyana (UG).
At his post-Cabinet press briefing held at the Office of the President, Cabinet Secretary Dr Roger Luncheon said the new programme areas are being offered at $250,000 per year tuition fee, the Government Information Agency (GINA) reported.
Luncheon also said that Cabinet has approved the retention of the Associate Degree Programme at UG. “This programme has been historically provided at the University of Guyana and it’s a three – year programme… Cabinet also found the proposed fee structure of Gy$250,000 for year acceptable for the first degree programme,” he said.
GINA noted that government is taking this step as part of its objective to deliver quality health care to citizens.
UG also introduced a Masters of Medicine in obstetrics and gynaecology, which is aimed at helping the local health sector to realise the Millennium Develop-ment Goals.
In 2002, the Bachelors of Science in Nursing programme was introduced to train nurses for overall performance as nurse managers and leaders, public health nurses, nurse educators and specialty clinical nurses.
Last year, the first batch of dentists graduated from the four-year Bachelor’s degree in dentistry programme.
