Guyana Education Trust College is through to the second round of the Digicel Schools Football Tournament after a 4-1 win over St Joseph High School.
Not one of the strongest teams in the competition, the Guyana Education Trust College tried hard to capitalize on the many scoring opportunities that became available. In many instances, players just could not score despite being right in front of the goal with a clear path. However, in the end the team managed to muster four goals, put up a strong defence and was successful in preventing St Joseph from making a comeback. The scorers for the Trust College were Joshua Williams in the 74th and 80th minutes and Joshua Britton in the 50th and 70th minutes. One of the four goals was a penalty which came off the boot of Britton.
The lone goal for St Joseph, a penalty, was scored by Kristoff Sauns in the 34th minute.
Gavin Williams, coach of the Trust College in an interview with Stabroek Sport said he was pleased with the results but not the performance of the team.
“Basically… I had one week or less to train the team because I am a substitute coach. I am not the permanent coach. Overall I am satisfied with the results but I think there is a lot of room for improvement,” Williams said.
He said preparing for round two would be an uphill task as the team has a lot of work to do to stay in the tournament.
“I think that everything has to be worked on because everything needs improving. It’s a young team with some strong players and some weak players, but we will be working on our weaknesses, which I will not be mentioning because I will be exposing my team,” he added.
