A father of five, accused of hitting his wife with a rolling-pin in a fight over his missing pigeon, was yesterday remanded to prison when he appeared before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.
The allegation against Deninauth Maiko is that on June 20, at West Ruimveldt, he inflicted grievous bodily harm on Samwattie Arjune.
The accused denied the charge when it was read to him at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
Police Prosecutor Philip Sheriff said that on the day in question, the two had a misunderstanding over a lost pigeon which ended with the accused lashing his wife with the object in her head.
The court was told that the complainant sent her son to look for the bird and he later returned reporting that he could not find it.
According to Sheriff, this report angered the defendant who subsequently armed himself with the rolling-pin with which he dealt the woman a lash to her head, from which she attempted to bar with her hand.
When asked by the magistrate if she is afraid of the defendant, the complainant responded, “Yes my worship.”
The unrepresented man, who begged for bail, was then informed that he will be remanded to prison.
His matter will be called again on July 6.
