Lindener Orville Hinds is the new national Road Race champion after he blitzed a star-studded field to pedal off with the winner’s trophy of the Road Race Championships yesterday.
Hinds’ winning time of three hours and 13 minutes for the 80-mile event which started at the Amelia’s ward entrance proceeded to Madewini Hill and returned to the starting point for the finish was more than enough to claim the top spot.
Hinds peddaled in almost two minutes before second place finisher and fellow Lindener Andrew Reece.
Eric Sankar, last year’s road race champion,Walter Grant- Stuart, Davenand Bissoon and Enzo Matthews occupied the third, fourth, fifth and sixth positions respectively.
Another rider from the Mining Town, Gordon Thompson, finished in seventh place ahead of Leer Nunes, Robin Persaud and Saturday’s winner of the senior category of the Guyana Cycling Federation (GCF) Time Trials, Jude Bentley respectively.
Olympic hopefuls Alonzo Greaves and Geron Williams along with Greaves’ Roraima Bikers Club mate Warren ‘40’ McKay all failed to finish the event for varying reasons.
Greaves and McKay crashed out, while Williams, who recently returned from a stint in the United States, suffered from cramps.
Raynauth Jeffrey, who won the junior category in the Time Trials on Saturday, continued his excellent year by winning the junior category ahead of Raul Leal and Linden natives Michael Anthony and Akeem Arthur.
Jeffery’s winning time for the 60-mile event was two hours, 36 minutes and 11 seconds. The juniors started at the Amelia’s ward entrance proceeded to Kuru Kuru Hill and returned to the starting point for the finish.
On the distaff side, overseas-based cyclist Claire Fraser-Greene won the women’s category from Naomi Singh and Marica Dick in a winning time of two hours, 35 minutes and 39 seconds.
In the 48- mile event, the females were required to proceed to Dora and returned to the starting point of Amelia Ward for the finish.
Junior Niles won the veterans’ event from Ian Jackson, Shameer Baksh and Kennard Lovell respectively.
