Santa Rosa Secondary School was yesterday adjudged champions of Region One in the Digicel Schools football competition when their opponents in yesterday’s final Hosororo were disqualified for fielding an over age player in the semi-final match against Port Kaituma.
On Saturday, Port Kaituma, the defending champions were disqualified after they themselves fielded players over the stipulated age limit in their clash against Hosororo.
Yesterday morning Hosororo’s coach Nigel Peters admitted to ding the same thing when confronted by Coordinator Lavern Fraser.
Peters admitted that he had indeed fielded a player who was over the stipulated age limited in the second half of the match against former defending champions Port Kaituma on Saturday at Settlement Ground, Mabaruma.
North West Secondary who lost 1-3 to Santa Rosa Secondary on Saturday are the runners up.
The disqualification of Port Kaituma and subsequently Hosororo has angered a number football fans in the community, some of who are calling for action to be taken against those responsible for enrolling the teams in the competition.
They claim that the actions have not only put a stain on the communities but has disadvantaged a number of players some of whom are talented footballers and should have been given an opportunity to play and gain recognition.
There are also calls for the coaches in the communities to teach the players the fundamentals of the game.
