Table tennis players will meet this afternoon at the Linmine Constabulary Recreational Hall to attempt to resuscitate the sport in the mining town.
The meeting commences at 5.30pm.
Today’s meeting will take place against the backdrop of a non functioning Linden Table Tennis Steering Committee which was formed about a year ago.
According to a release, tournaments run off by the Guyana Table Tennis Association have not attracted many players from Linden which has in the past produced a number of the country’s top players such as former national player Horace Benjamin, the late Ray Ramessar, Auric Tappin, Ray Anderson, Marlon Washington, Linden `Kowie’ Stephens, Gary Stevens, Kay Blair and others.
According to the release the meeting has been called by persons interested in ensuring that there is functioning body which will look after the interest of the sport going forward.
Washington, Anderson and Howard James are International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) accredited coaches.
However, there has not been a sustained programme of training to unearth new players over the years, today’s meeting is expected to address the state of administration in the sport, stated the release.
