Giving the tourist industry a bad name?

Dear Editor,

On Wednesday, June 20, I watched a discussion with Minister Irfaan Alli, Gerry Gouveia and Clinton Urling, where they were promoting the Marriott hotel and all the benefits it would bring to Guyana. During that discussion Gouveia said that some people came to Guyana by air and wanted to overnight here, but couldn’t find a hotel with the standard to suit them.

Well that piece of information staggered my mind. If Mr Gouveia is correct, and I don’t see him as being incorrect, who are these people who couldn’t find the Pegasus or Duke Lodge good enough to spend a night and they had to fly to Trinidad to find accommodation?

What were they trying to do – give our tourist industry a bad name? I do hope they never find themselves in a situation where they have to sleep in a shelter or a tent; they will most likely be devastated.

Yours faithfully,
WP George
