The undermentioned I am certain, will raise questions in certain sections of our community.
Jamzone Pageant: The fever is on, the ladies are raring to go. Each will tell of their aspirations in their quest to become Ms Jamzone 2012. What is never told by way of the media, is their academic qualifications. Maybe that is not a necessity.
Six weeks?: I do commiserate with both the child and her father; they both do need counselling. We need to curb domestic violence in its early stage; however, to sentence the father, the sole breadwinner (who does not have a history of that type of behaviour), to six weeks imprisonment is harsh, especially when one considers the effect it will have on the child. Her father is now a ‘convict.’
Sunday in the city:
a. A most auspicious day. Sunday Mass is over, worshippers exit the cathedral and proceed to the Life Centre building; lo and behold, a female street-dweller, naked from the waist down, appears, bringing them tidings of good joy.
b. The Brickdam Police Station is a most unwelcome place, where the stench of urine assails the nostrils on entering the compound. This day, a man, his slacks and underwear around his ankles, balances precariously over the drain close to the police station, and defecates.
The assassination: Thank you, Mr Lamming, for your scholarly contribution to the 32nd anniversary of Dr Walter Rodney’s assassination. His (Dr Rodney’s) colleagues, who are now parliamentarians and academics, are afraid to use the words ‘execution’ or ‘assassination’, to describe their late leader’s untimely death. What price for a seat in Parliament.
Boycott: The move by the YCT to once more call for a boycott of events hosted by Hits and Jams and the Kashif and Shanghai group should be strongly condemned. It sends a message that any person, group or organization, who supports (overtly or covertly) the People’s Progressive Party must be punished. The excuse that they are advising their members and supporters, to be financially prudent is both laughable and sinister. Sinister, in that prudency arises only when Hits and Jams and the Kashif and Shanghai group have their events. The call by the YCT is reminiscent of the 1980s, when the WPA was considered public enemy number one by the then Government of Guyana.
