Thirty-seven-year-old local sprint queen Alisha Fortune produced an exceptional effort to capture a bronze medal in the women’s `B’ class 200m final at the Sagicor National Championships at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Trinidad which ended on Sunday.
Despite missing out on a podium finish in the 100m on day one, Fortune ran an aggressive turn and managed to hold on for third place in 24.60s behind Grenadians Janelle Redhead (23.87s) and Sherine Wells (24.02s).
The stellar event also saw the Trinidad and Tobago prospective Olympic 4X400m team breaking a 20-year-old national record established by Patrick Delice, Alvin Daniel, Neil De Silva and Ian Morris in 1992 as they ran 3:00.45s, led by starter and former World Championship bronze medallist Renny Quow, followed by Lalonde Gordon, Jarrin Solomon and Deon Lendore.
Earlier in the evening, Trinidad and Tobago’s 4X100m national team failed to complete the hotly contested event as they dropped the baton during a pass attempt between their third and final legs.
The event was won by the St Kitts & Nevis team of Delwayne Delaney, Jason Rogers, Antoine Adams and Brijesh Lawrence in a time of 39.06s.
