The Ministry of Tourism launched the Coomacka Weekend Festival billed for June 30 to July 1, and designed with the aim of drawing Guyanese in the Diaspora back home.
According to a press release, acting Minister of Tourism, Industry and Commerce Irfaan Ali said the “innovative event” is designed as a family activity and encouraged citizens to give their full support. It will be held at the Coomacka Community Centre Ground and will including sporting activities, river tours, craft, pictorial exhibitions, fishing exhibitions and a fashion show.
The event was designed under the ‘Rediscover Guyana’ programme. Ali lauded organisers Livewire Productions for their initiative to host this activity. Executive Producer of Livewire Productions Andrew McBean said the festival aims to increase awareness about the unique Region 10 village located seven miles east of Linden, while providing an economic boost to the community.
“The area has a perfect blend of activities which you rarely find. It has a tourism product that is so extensive; it falls within the framework of the Government’s plan to promote community based tourism…. We want a lot of our own people living across the coastland to make use of this opportunity to visit Coomacka,” Ali said.
