A policeman was yesterday charged with raping a 15-year-old girl at the Matthew’s Ridge Police Station, after which he allegedly allowed another man to do the same to her.
Police Constable Carlos Pollydore was admitted to bail in the sum of $500,000 when he appeared before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
It was alleged that on January 1, Pollydore sexually penetrated the minor and that he also allowed an unidentified man to engage in sexual penetration of the same minor.
Pollydore, of Brighton Village, Corentyne, Berbice, who was attached to the Matthew’s Ridge Police Station, was not required to plead to the indictable charges when they were read to him.
The proceedings were held in-camera [to the exclusion of the public] because of the age of the virtual complainant and the nature of the charges.
Police prosecutor Philip Sheriff said that on the day of the crime, at about 2 am, the teen was standing on the road near to a shop with a friend, while Pollydore and the unidentified man were standing nearby.
According to Sheriff, the girl was approached by someone else who asked if she was going home and she responded in the affirmative. As she was about to leave, however, the constable is alleged to have called her and told her to go to the station.
The girl initially refused but Sheriff said the policeman threatened to lock her up and as a result she complied with his instruction. The prosecutor said Pollydore then carried the girl to a room in the police station, where he had sex with her. Afterward, he allegedly allowed his companion to also have sex with the child. She was then sent home.
Upon her arrival home, Sheriff said, the young girl was questioned by her sister, to whom she related what transpired. A police report was subsequently made and an investigation was launched that resulted in Pollydore being arrested and charged.
Pollydore was admitted to bail in the sum of $250,000 on each charge. The case was transferred to the Matthews’ Ridge Magistrate’s Court for August 7.
