Trinidad Cement Limited (TCL) has cemented a deal with the Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club (RHTYSC) which will see the company assisting with sponsorship for the club’s 15th annual cricket academy.
The deal was consumated on Thursday morning
in the boardroom of the company’s head office when Plant Manager Mark Bender presented the RHTYSC president Keith Foster with a cheque for an undisclosed sum in the presence of media operatives. The academy will commence on July 9 at the Area ‘H’ Ground, Rose Hall, Berbice and will cater for approximately 120 cricketers (male and female) between the age of eight and 18 years.
Bender stated that this was not the first time that the firm has been involved in sports sponsorship.
“Involvement in sports is not something new for this company so we are most pleased to co-sponsor this event,” Bender said.
Foster stated that the club was very thankful for the contribution made by TCL and gave all assurance that the club will use the finance for the intended purpose.
“We would personally like to thank the management of TCL for their sponsorship of the academy and for investing in the future of Rose Hall, Berbice and West Indies cricket,” Foster said.
The academy will be organized by the Cricket Development Committee of the club and the different cricket teams of the club which involve Farfan and Mendes under-15, Bakewell under-17 and second division, Pepsi under-19, Gizmos and Gagets under-21 and first division and the Metro female teams will all be participating in the academy.
At the end of the academy, a graduation ceremony will be held and outstanding students will be honored.
Awards will be made to the best batsman, best bowler, most disciplined, most committed, best in attendance, and cricketer-of-the-academy.
Several lectures on topics of importance
Such as HIV/AIDS, drug abuse, public speaking, personal hygiene and peer pressure will take place.
The club said that over the last 14 years the club has hosted a cricket academy during the month of July with the objectives of identifying and grooming new cricketing talents, further developing existing talents, instilling the importance of discipline and education and getting young cricketers to understand their roles as sports ambassadors and role models.
It was also pointed out that the academy has enabled different cricket teams, especially those at the junior levels, to dominate in cricket in Guyana.
