Woman calling for probe after Mabaruma Hospital miscarriage

A woman in the early stages of pregnancy suffered a miscarriage at the Mabaruma Hospital, in the North West District on Sunday morning and she wants an investigation of the care she received at the facility.

Sharon Mendonca, 33, was four months pregnant when she visited the hospital with complaints of pains. She was subsequently admitted to the hospital’s maternity ward and she is claiming that she was left alone by the medical staffers, who last checked on her around 3am on Sunday morning.

Efforts to contact the hospital for a comment were unsuccessful.

Mendonca told Stabroek News on Tuesday evening that she travelled to Mabaruma last Friday from the city by plane. While the plane was descending into the Region One community, she felt a searing pain in her abdomen. However, after arriving in the community, she went home, where she continued to experience abdominal pains.

On Saturday night, around 10pm, Mendonca experienced severe pains and, upon the advice of her mother, she later visited the hospital. She said that around 1:30am, after difficulty finding transportation, she travelled to the hospital.

This newspaper was told that two midwives and two nurses were on duty at the time, while the resident doctor was in Georgetown on assignment. “They give me drips and said that I will be treated for the pains,” Mendonca recalled. She added that she stayed awake for the remainder of night as she continued to experience pain about her body.

At dawn on Sunday, Mendonca said she was numb about her body and the nurses ran to her assistance when she cried out. She said that after carrying out several checks, the nurses told her that the baby had died. She said that she broke down. The young woman stated that the medical staff “show no remorse” and according to her the family will approach the Health Ministry for an investigation of the case.
